Advocacy for Diaspora Liberians’ Equal Participation in the Government

Our advocacy campaigns promote equal participation for Diaspora Liberians in government by breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity. We work to ensure that the voices of Diaspora Liberians are heard and represented in the governance of their homeland.

We address legislative, legal, and diplomatic challenges through strategic initiatives to create a more inclusive political landscape. By building coalitions and amplifying advocacy efforts, we aim to strengthen representation and engagement.

Here are the strategies that can be employed:

Legislative Advocacy:

  • Work with policymakers to propose and advocate for legislation that promotes equal rights and representation for Diaspora Liberians in government.
  • Develop and present evidence-based proposals that highlight the benefits of Diaspora participation, such as dual citizenship, voting rights for Liberians living abroad, and dedicated government seats for Diaspora representatives.
  • Engage with legislative committees to ensure policy discussions include Diaspora issues and that draft legislation supports their participation.

Coalition Building:

  • Form alliances with other advocacy groups, civil society organizations, and political parties with aligned goals to build a unified voice advocating for Diaspora participation in government.
  • Collaborate on joint advocacy campaigns, public events, and lobbying efforts to raise awareness and increase influence.
  • Create networks to share information and resources among various stakeholders, helping to sustain momentum in advocating for Diaspora participation.

Legal Challenges:

  • Explore legal avenues to challenge discriminatory practices that restrict Diaspora Liberians from participating in government.
  • Engage legal experts to identify and address potential legal barriers, such as restrictive voting laws or discriminatory citizenship requirements.
  • Pursue legal action where necessary to ensure equal rights and representation for Diaspora Liberians in government and other civic processes.

Diplomatic Engagement:

  • Establish relationships with diplomatic missions, international organizations, and foreign governments to garner support for Diaspora rights and participation in government.
  • Engage in diplomatic dialogues to advocate for recognition of the Diaspora’s role and contributions to Liberia’s development and policy-making.
  • Leverage international support to apply pressure on domestic policymakers and to encourage policy changes that promote inclusive governance.
